Before I get into the shows that are happening this week, I want to take a moment to remember a local musician who we just lost, Charlie Chesterman. Charlie was a fixture in the Boston club scene with the band Scruffy the Cat in the 1980s, which brought alt-country to college radio and even MTV. After Scruffy disbanded, Charlie formed the Harmony Rockets and then Chaz and the Motorbikes. A few years ago Charlie was diagnosed with cancer. There were a number of benefits to raise money to help with the medical bills. At one one of the benefits in 2011 there was a brief set of a reunited Scruffy the Cat and it was so much fun. At any of Charlie’s shows, he was always approachable, funny, friendly and a little self deprecating. Word got out this week that Charlie was gone. The Boston music community has lost a great talent and a good guy.

Now onto what’s happening this week. On Thursday it’s the return of My Bloody Valentine who last release was over 20 years ago and they’re back at the House of Blues. Also on Thursday is the Phil Aiken Army, The Darlings and Hillbilly Holiday at Radio. On Friday there’s an early show at the Lizard Lounge with Grant Lee Phillips (remember Grant Lee Buffalo? Yup, that’s him) and later on you can head over to Radio for the Dirty Truckers, Kurt Baker Band and Jay Allen at Radio or check out night one of the Beatle Butchers at Toad. Are not ready to face the coming cold season? Then on Saturday travel to the Midway for a night of tropical drinks, loud floral print clothing and Hawaiian music for The Polynesian Pounce with Lucky Tubb and the Modern Day Hawaiians. Also on Saturday I, Pistol, Tenafly Vipers and Z*L at Tavern are at the End of the World in Charlestown and the Beatle Butchers have night 2 at Toad. Sunday has Luke Temple and Celestial Shore at Brighton Music Hall and JD Wilkes + the Dirt Daubers and Buck 55 at Atwoods. On Monday Michael Nesmith is at Narrows Center for the Arts in Fall River and there’s Americana Monday at Pa’s Lounge. Happening on Tuesday is Al Stewart (of Time Passages and Year of the Cat fame) at Passim and Mike Gent and the Rapid Shave at Sally O’Brien’s. And on Wednesday Destroyer is at the Brighton Music Hall and Ha Ha Tonka is at TT’s.
