Amy’s Shows List began many years ago as an attempt to inspire my friends to get out and hear some live music.

And it grew.

Suddenly people were forwarding to their friends and I started getting requests to add names to the weekly email list. In 2009 I was invited to be a weekly contributor to Boston Band Crush (RIP) with my list. I continued with BBC until its demise in 2012. Since then the email list continues to go out weekly and I still encourage people to get off their couches and go out and check out bands. Now I’m looking forward to sharing list of recommended shows with all of you Dig people. Hope you like it.

My email is AmysShowsList@gmail.com if you have shows to add or want to be on the complete email list (which goes months into the future).

A weekend of cold rain into a week of 90-degree weather. Yup, this is definitely springtime in New England. At least we have great music to deal with the climate oddities. On Thursday Roots in the Round with Brian Carroll, Ian Fitzgerald, Noal Coakley and Dave Deluca is at the Plough and Stars and if you feel like taking a ride, Dave Davies (yup, one of the Davies Brothers from the Kinks) is at the Bull Run in Shirley. Friday has some tough choices; The Pop Gun Release Party at the Middle East Upstairs is a great choice especially now that Muck + the Mires are on the bill too.

Other tempting shows are Boston Surfs Music and Film Festival with Matt Heaton, Tsunami of Sound and The Derangers with a screening of Immersion at the Regent Theatre and No Love (featuring Sarah Borges) at the Plough and Stars. On Saturday night imagine yourself in the tropics with lovely umbrella cocktails at the Polynesian Pounce with music by Labretta Suede and the Motel 6, and even BBQ from Blue Ribbon, at the Midway. Another cool show is Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys, Shepardess, Soft Focus and Chris North at Johnny D’s.

Sunday has the Roy Sludge Trio at Radio at 4pm for free … and it’s always a great time. After that check out The Bats who came all the way from New Zealand to play at Great Scott. (Can’t wait!)

Monday has Magic Magic, Three Ahs, and Bent Shapes at Precinct and Night of the Living Deadhead with Slowdim, Hands + Knees, Slam Dunk and Babysitter at ZuZu. On Tuesday The Stranglers and The Nervous Eaters are at Brighton Music Hall.

And on Wednesday night check out Gary Louris at Passim; looking forward to hearing some Jayhawks songs.

Wow, this is one of those Thursdays where you just want to be at every club at once and sadly you can’t be. But you know what that means … that whatever choice you make, it’s going to be a stellar one. Let’s start with Jonathan Richman at the Somerville Theatre. Did you know that there’s a campaign to make his song Roadrunner (from when he was with the Modern Lovers) the state rock song of Massachusetts? Pretty darn cool.

Also happening on Thursday is the big Benefit for Eva Lipton with The Upper Crust, Dave Mineham, Downbeat 5, Dogmatics, Roy Sludge, Bristols, The Dents and Classic Ruins, at TT’s and at the Cantab/Club Bohemia it’s the resurgence of Bob Colby Presents Second Thursday with Mary Lou Lord, Matt Minigell, Kingdom of Love, and Randy Black which was formerly held at the Rosebud (RIP).

Amy’s Shows List began many years ago as an email list and continues as one to inspire people to catch live music around town. It was featured on Boston Band Crush and is now The Dig.

My email is AmysShowsList@gmail.com if you have shows to add or want to be on the complete email list (which lists shows far into the future).

In the words of Dave Alvin and performed by X, Hey baby, it’s the 4th of July.

We know what that means for the Boston area, about 40 billion plus or minus a couple dozen people flocking to the Esplanade to hear the Pops and watch the fireworks. Most clubs are closed or have limited musical offerings. Toad is open on Thursday and have some uke music from Melvern Taylor and then the Baker Thomas Band play. On Friday night Beware the Dangers of the Ghost Scorpion, Jacques Coque, The Zookeepers and Polaroids are at O’Brien’s

…and John Powhida International Airport and A.K.A.C.O.D. (featuring Monique Ortiz, Dana Colley and Larry Dersch) at the Lizard Lounge. Saturday has Speedy Ortiz, Grass is Green and The Vegans at Great Scott and Shoney Lamar + the Equal Rights, Blackbutton, Vending Machetes and DOZE at Church. On Sunday afternoon The Roy Sludge Trio…

…performs at Radio at 4p and if you want some old school rock, The Zombies are at the Regent Theatre, heard it was soldout but hopefully you have tix already. Monday night has The Polyphonic Spree at the Brighton Music Hall. Are they cult? Are they a band? Do they just like wearing matching robes? Or are they just a great band to see live? You decide.

Also on Monday So Many Dynamos, Pretty + Nice and Hexmap are at Great Scott. On Tuesday Scottish, caridigan wearing, indie band Belle and Sebastian

…and Hoboken’s own Yo La Tengo are at the Bank of America Pavillion and some guy named Paul McCartney from some band called The Beatles is at Fenway Park and sold it old in like 3 milliseconds. And on Wednesday night Streight Angular, Young + Old, Hot Molasses and The Double-Stops are at Johnny D’s and at the Bank of America Pavilion there’s She and Him (featuring hipster pin-up girl Zooey Deschanel and the oh so cool M Ward) and dreamy poppers Camera Obscura from Scotland.

Man, there is nothing better than starting the weekend off with a show and no one rocks quite like the Upper Crust with their odes to Rock n Roll Butlers, Rickshaw Boys, and Little Lord Fauntleroy happening at Precinct on Thursday. Labor Day? How did we get to the unofficial end of summer? What about our summer to do list that isn’t complete. We definitely need at least a few more weeks. Typically holiday weekends don’t have a lot to offer musically but not this one. Phew! Lots of things to do. On Thursday night Melvern Taylor and His Fabulous Meltones are at Toad early and then and Baker Thomas Band is there for the late set. Also on Thursday Matt Charette, Tom Baker, and Travis Alexander are at the Plough and Stars. Friday has Monsieurs, Thick Shakes, and Radio Control at O’Brien’s; Eric Martin and Chris MacLachlin at the Plough and The Queers and The Dwarves at Church. These are all great choices. On Saturday Bikini Whale doing their B52s tribute thing and The Beachcombovers doing their surf guitar thing at Johnny D’s is a such an awesome farewell to summer show. I hear there are even going to be belly dancers cause nothin’ says surf music quite like belly dancers. Also happening on Saturday are Aloud, Eddie Japan, Raccoon Fighter and Ruby Rose Fox at Great Scott and The Weisstronauts at the Midway. On Sunday I am so excited for the show at Radio with Giuda (glam rockers from Italy with a punk edge) and the Kurt Baker Band (who do pop hooks right).

Actually, I might even get there early and catch the Roy Sludge Trio at 4 p.m. at Radio first and just stay all night. Another show on Sunday that looks pretty cool is the Mayor of Rock and Roll Kickoff Party with Brendan Boogie and Nicole Dessinque, Muy Cansado, Gene Dante amd the Future Starlets, Adrian Emberly, and the Revolving Band and Abbie Barrett at TT’s. Monday has Hop Along, The Sidekicks, Choke Up, and Save Ends at the Middle East Upstairs. Tuesday has a rockin’ show at O’Brien’s with Alright, Power Slut, Atomic Savants, and Thrust Club (featuring some graduates of Ladies Rock Camp) and a dreamy show at Great Scott with Richard Youngs (formerly of A Band), Damon and Naomi (formerly of Galaxie 500), and Mad Nanna. On Wednesday night there’s the Supersuckers, Slim Jim, and the Mad Cows at the Middle East Downstairs for some fun, country-fried garage and hard rock. Also on Wednesday, the Giant Kings do their final residency show for a while at the Lizard Lounge.
